Participation in the United Nations
Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).
In 1997, Tokio Marine & Nichido signed the UNEP Statement of Environmental Commitment by the Insurance Industry. We share information and pursues research in environmental finance, acting in cooperation with financial institutions all over the world.
Company president's speech at the Tokyo Meeting of UNEP FI in 2003
On October 20 and 21, 2003, the Tokyo Meeting of the UNEP FI Global Roundtable Meeting on Finance and Sustainability was held in Asia for the first time. At the meeting, company president Kunio Ishihara (current chairman) gave a keynote speech entitled 'Climate Change and the Initiatives of the Japanese Non-Life Insurance Industry' in English. In the speech, he talked about the courses of action which the non-life insurance industry should take, including contributions to the global environment through primary insurance activities. He also emphasized the importance of educational activities promoting protection of the environment.
Presentation at the UNEP FI International Conference in 2005
On October 25 and 26, 2005, we attended the UNEP FI International Conference held in the United Nations Building in New York. Mr. Shunpei Okada, Planning Group Leader of the Commercial Lines Underwriting Department at the time, gave a presentation at the session on the 'Use of Weather Derivatives towards a Sustainable Society', discussing the theme of weather-based risks and hedging. He also presented an overview of the 'Research on the Scientific Basis for Sustainability' project supported by our company.

On November 18, 2008, the above seminar was held jointly by the Asahi Shimbun, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. and the Tokio Marine Research Institute at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, with the co-sponsorship of UNEP FI.
Participation in the Insurance Working Group
We take part in the Insurance Working Group, which has conducted research in insurance and environmental finance through UNEP FI since its inception. We are the only Asian insurance company participating in the Group.
