Our environmental philosophy and policies

Environmental Philosophy

We have adopted the conservation of the global environment as one of our key management policies, and in recognition of the important responsibility of all humans and companies in the present world to conserve the environment, we have committed ourselves to the task of bringing about a society where sustainable development is maintained with the efforts of all employees throughout the entire range of our business activities, in order to improve and maintain harmony with the environment.

Environmental Policies

We have established the following policies and will make every effort to realize them in all areas of our activities:

1. Conservation of the Global Environment through the Insurance Business

We will work on conserving the global environment through our activities in the business fields of insurance products, claims services, financial services, etc.

2. Effective Use of Resources & Energy

We will work on conserving resources and energy, recycling resources and promoting green purchasing, in full recognition of the burden on the environment caused by the consumption of resources and energy, and the discharge of waste.

3. Compliance with Environmental Laws

We will comply with relevant environmental laws and regulations and with other requirements to which we subscribe.

4. Continuous Improvement of the Environment and Prevention of Pollution

We will continuously work on improving the environment and the prevention of pollution by setting objectives and targets and reviewing them periodically for better performance.

5. Promotion of Environmental Awareness-raising and Social Contribution Activities

We will work on improving the environment through dissemination of relevant information, provision of consulting services, and promotion of environmental education both inside and outside The Company, and engage in furtherance of community and social contribution activities as a good corporate citizen.

The above policies should be made well-known to and understood by all employees and released to the public.

Progress for the future

Based upon the above 'Environmental Philosophy' and 'Environmental Policies', we have been promoting activities to improve and maintain harmony with the environment, with the assistance and participation of all employees.

Our CSR Section in the Corporate Planning Department is principally responsible for promoting environmental protection activities at the company level. Selected leaders from among divisions, branches and affiliated companies under our Group serve as 'key persons' with responsibility for the promotion of social and environmental activities at the workplace level.

In 1999, our head office acquired certification under the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard. Moreover, our local divisions and branches (other than our head office), as well as affiliated companies under our Group, have introduced our own environmental management systems and effectively implement these systems using the PDCA cycle procedure.

Additionally, Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc., our parent company, has resolved to carry out environmental management activities involving its entire Group to facilitate environmental protection activities on a global basis. Environmental management systems, including data capture for environmental load reduction and performance monitoring, are scheduled for expansion on a step-by-step basis at our domestic business locations as well as major locations throughout the world.
